John “Jack” R. Fletcher, Jr., 87, Hanover Twp, Pennsylvania passed away Monday, August 23, 2021, at his home.

Born in Kingston, he was the only child of the late Thelma and John R Fletcher Sr. He was a 1953 graduate of Kingston High School. After high school he proudly served in the United States Navy, following in the footsteps of many family members.

Education was very important to Jack and early in life he knew teaching was the only thing for him. It was his passion. He was greatly influenced by his high school teachers especially Mr. Stahl/History, Ms. Collins/English, Ms. Turner/Music, and Mr. Vail English. Once eligible, he signed up for the reserves in high school. He was a first-generation college graduate. Following his Naval service, he went on to earn a master’s degree from Bloomsburg State Teachers College, now known as Bloomsburg University. He majored in biology and minored in the Greek City-States.

Jack started his career at Berwick High School teaching science and finished his career at Bloomsburg University as a professor in the biology department for nearly 35 years. He was very involved with his students even going as far as to give them his home phone number if they had questions about an assignment. He sought out opportunities to teach inner city youth and those in the prison system. After retirement he remained in touch with many of his students from high school and college and enjoyed hearing about their successes throughout their lives.

Some of his greatest joys was coaching the junior high school wrestling team, his son’s little league team, and serving as the Drama director for high school productions.

Jack was a member of the Freemasons and Shriners. He remained connected to many of his high school friends through his life especially Chuck Peterman.

He was preceded in death by Ann Fletcher, mother of his 3 children. Surviving is his beloved companion, Sandra Hunt, who he adored. Also, son John R. Fletcher III, and wife Suzanne, Hanover Twp.; daughters Jacqueline Brozena and husband Jim, West Pittston; Jill Scroggs and husband Brian, Chalfont; granddaughters; Erica Fletcher and Lauren Fletcher and faithful dog, Cuddles.

The service will be held at the convenience of the family from the Metcalfe-Shaver-Kopcza Funeral Home, Wyoming. Interment will be in the Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville. There will be no calling hours.

Family has requested that memorial donations be made to Hanover Twp Community Ambulance Medic, 9, 1001 Center St., Hanover Twp., Pa 18706, who were so kind and compassionate during their calls.
