Deborah Ann Marcy, 64, passed away after a hard fought battle with ALS. During her passing, she was surrounded by her loving husband, her dedicated daughters, close family members, and the love of those who knew her.
Born September 8, 1956, Debbie was the daughter of the late David and Lillian Werts, Sr. A graduate of Dallas Senior High School’s class of 1974, she later went on to nursing school where she became an LPN. Debbie was married to the love of her life, Martin, with whom she would have celebrated 43 years of marriage on September 8, 2021. The love and dedication that Debbie and Martin had for each other may be the greatest love story ever told.
Debbie is survived by her husband, Martin; eldest daughter, Rebecca Rodriguez and son-in-law Richard Rodriguez; youngest daughter, Ashley Marcy and son-in-law Garret Davey; granddaughters, Beatrice Marcy-Davey, Caceila Rodriguez, and Yanira Peters; as well as 5 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her 3 brothers; Daniel, David, and Dean, as well as many nieces and nephews who she loved immensely.
As a nurse for 45 years, Debbie lived in service to others. Countless patients received her care during her tenure at both CMC and Geisinger Health Systems. On so many occasions, Debbie and her family would meet previous patients eager to express their gratitude for her attentiveness. There’s no doubt that the ripple effect of her compassion is beyond measure. Debbie gained deep appreciation and respect from her coworkers due to her experience, commitment to teamwork, and her desire to mentor fellow nurses. This appreciation carried her spirit through the difficult days after her diagnosis. All who knew her understood the gravity of her situation when she made the decision to stop working.
To know Debbie was to love her. She was the definition of the salt of the earth. Her home was a haven for many and the door was always open. Debbie was the first to take care of you and the first to feed you. If you knew Debbie, there was a high probability that you had the privilege of tasting her incredible cooking, her delicious baking, and her meticulously made canned goods. While she had two daughters, she was Mother to many. From her days as a Girl Scout leader to her willingness to host party upon party for her girls, so many young people grew up calling her Momma Marcy. There was not a single person that her kindness was not extended to.
Debbie taught the world, so very much. She taught her daughters how to be resilient while maintaining compassion for all. She taught her husband how to care for others so well that he became the greatest caretaker of all. She taught us to dance (with or without rhythm) and sing (even if you can’t carry a tune in a bucket). She taught us to eat the cake and enjoy the ice cream. She taught us to slow down and appreciate time on the front porch. She taught us and showed us how to love everyone because it’s just what you do. And most of all, she taught us to throw our heads back and laugh.
A Celebration of Deborah’s Life will be held Saturday August 28, 2021, at 1pm in the Metcalfe Shaver Kopcza Funeral Home Inc 504 Wyoming Avenue Wyoming with the Rev. Carol Folk officiating.
